Delayed wound healing, particularly in difficult wounds, non-healing chronic wounds, bed sores, large loss of skin in traumatic wounds, or wounds infected with slough, is common in the elderly with co-morbidities. This often leads to prolonged treatment and may require major reconstructive surgery. Vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) is an alternative to conventional methods of wound management. The use of negative pressure vacuum-assisted dressing is a non-pharmacologic and non-surgical means for assisting wound healing. It was first proposed by Argenta and Morykwas in 1997 (Argenta L.C., Morykwas M.J. Vacuum-assisted closure: a new method for wound control and treatment.
Clinical experience. Ann Plast Surg. 1997;38:563–577). Vacuum application reduces oedema, controls infection, and increases local blood flow, which promotes healing . The wounds heal 60% faster. A sterile foam, about an…
