In past couple of year, there has been a tremendous increase in the knowledge, technology and skills required to treat critically ill patients. This has led to the development of intensive care units (ICUs), and Intensivist, a physician, who is specialized in 'critical care' medicine for critically ill patients.
These ICUs were traditional guarded and managed by primary physicians who used to admit patients in ICUs under their own care.
