Despite an increasing number of highly trained dental graduates who can improve the overall oral health of the country, there are several challenges the oral health system faces in India. These include: Lack of basic health infrastructure in rural areas where the majority of the population resides.

Oral healthcare is not considered a priority by the government, policymakers, and even communities Oversupply of dentists in urban areas Skewed dentist to population ratio Lopsided dental specialty training Immigration and migration of dental workforce These problems have resulted majorly due to a lack of any specific design or policy planning to manage and distribute the dental workforce efficiently and strategically. The present scenario can be improved by changing the upstream approaches such as compulsory one-year rotatory internships to provide oral healthcare in rural areas.…
