World Schizophrenia Day is celebrated on 24 th May annually. The purpose of this day is to spread awareness about this illness, eradicate the myths and superstitions around mental illnesses in general. The day is honored to Dr. Philippe Pinel, from France, a major figure in the early efforts to provide humane care and treatment for the mentally ill. Schizophrenia is a relatively common mental disorder, with a lifetime risk approaching one percent.

The disorder is slightly more common in men. People diagnosed with schizophrenia have a shorter life expectancy than the general population but with similar causes of premature death including cardiovascular disease, respiratory illness and cancer.
