The Maharashtra State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has awarded ₹7 lakh compensation, along with 9% annual interest from the date of filing the complaint and ₹50,000 towards litigation costs, to a 73-year-old Dombivli woman who permanently lost vision in one eye following cataract surgery. The verdict comes after a legal battle spanning more than 13 years. The patient underwent cataract surgery in December 2011 after being informed that it was a routine procedure.
However, she subsequently developed severe pain, redness, and progressive vision loss. Despite receiving further treatment, her vision could not be restored and reportedly deteriorated to the level of perceiving only light and shadows. While the commission did not find conclusive evidence of surgical negligence, it held the doctor and hospital liable for deficiency in service due to inadequate informed consent.…
