Hyperglycemia is a serious risk factor for diabetic microvascular complications. Several landmark studies have reported that lowering the HbA1c by 1% decreases microvascular complications by approximately 35%. It is also reported that approximately half of the individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus T2DM fail to achieve the American Diabetes Association goal of glycemic control (HbA1c,7.0%). Hence, novel therapeutic agents with a unique mechanism of actions and strategies are essential to improve glycemic control in T2DM patients.
