An Ahmedabad-based senior citizen has been awarded compensation by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC), Ahmedabad (Rural), after a private hospital failed to provide him with essential medical records following his treatment for COVID-19, thereby depriving him of health insurance reimbursement. The complainant, a retired employee of New India Assurance Co. Ltd., was covered under a health insurance policy with a sum insured of Rs 15 lakh.
During the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2021, he tested positive for the virus and was admitted to the concerned private hospital, where he underwent treatment for nearly two weeks. During this period, the patient incurred expenses amounting to Rs 3.17 lakh towards treatment and over Rs 12,000 for diagnostic investigations.
