The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi has introduced magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS), a cutting-edge neurotechnology that offers a non-invasive alternative to brain surgeries for conditions like essential tremors and Parkinson’s disease. This technology combines real-time MRI with ultrasound, enabling precise treatment without incisions. The AIIMS Neurology Head called the procedure a “game-changer,” as it can replace Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), which requires brain implants. However, MRgFUS costs less than half of the ₹12 lakh required for DBS.

Additionally, it will be significantly more affordable than in private hospitals, where the procedure costs around ₹20 lakh. The two-hour MRgFUS procedure involves fitting an ultrasonic cap, with MRI guiding the ultrasound beam to targeted brain areas. Patients remain conscious and leave tremor-free.…
