AIIMS mortuary has set up a radiological unit to enable virtual autopsies as an alternative to standard autopsies. The ‘virtual autopsy’, also referred as a virtopsy, employs imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), etc., to find the cause of the death. The purpose of this decision lies in advantages that are offered by virtual autopsies such as it is less time consuming, aids better diagnosis, and renders respect to religious sentiments.
Also, it can be very useful in decomposed corpse and reexamination is possible in case of the second opinion. However, virtopsy can be associated with high cost, limitations of radiology, no errors rate available, limitations of surface scanning, and loss of data due to merging different imaging techniques.
