China has reported what authorities describe as the world's first commercial implantation of an approved brain-computer interface, marking a notable step in the clinical adoption of neurotechnology. The procedure was performed at Huashan Hospital, affiliated with Fudan University, in Shanghai, using the NEO brain-computer interface developed by Neuracle Medical Technology. The recipient was a patient with a chronic spinal cord injury sustained in a motor vehicle accident about 10 years ago. Despite prolonged rehabilitation, the patient continued to have severe impairment in hand function and was selected for implantation after multidisciplinary evaluation.
