Pre-operative anemia and transfusion are prevalent in patients undergoing elective orthopedic surgery. Patient blood management by pre-operative administration of iron and/or erythropoietin is one of the best approaches to reduce pre-operative anemia and transfusion. In the present study, researchers investigated the influence of pre-operative preparation of patients with iron and/or erythropoietin who were undergoing elective orthopedic surgery. Study design: Single-centre, retrospective study with two cohorts was conducted.
Data of 5518 patients who underwent total hip or total knee replacement surgery between 2008 and 2014 was collected.
