Zika virus disease is an emerging global threat which is transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. This is the same mosquito which is known to transmit infections like dengue and chikungunya. It is associated with severe neurological complications, particularly congenital Zika virus syndrome and Guillain Barré syndrome. Therefore, it is very important for medical professionals to be updated and learn how best to support these cases.
Zika virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947. Outbreaks of Zika virus disease have been recorded in Africa, America, Asia and the Pacific. WHO announced Zika virus disease as a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern" .
