A decision of starting anti-retroviral therapy (ART) and to maintain it to achieve a successful therapeutic outcome is critical in HIV patients. This article will focus on the basics of ART in terms of when, whom and how to administer ART. The following recommendations are based on our current understanding of the pathophysiology of HIV disease and the results of clinical trials.
