In view of recent news on the dumping of Biomedical waste (BMW) from one state into the boundary of neighboring state, one needs to ponder whose responsibility is BMW management? Is it due to lack of awareness or due to ignorance? BMW management is legal liability and social accountability. Ignorance can be overcome by knowing what is BMW?
Why should it be managed properly? What happens if it’s mismanaged? BMW is any waste, which is generated during the diagnosis, treatment or immunisation of human beings or animals or research activities pertaining thereto or in the production or testing of biological or in health camps. Though by and large it is assumed to refer to waste produced in hospitals or healthcare facilities, one should understand that waste produced in diagnostic laboratories, dental clinics, facilities providing alternative/ traditional treatment, research laboratories etc…
