Ophthalmic camps are very common in India and are often conducted in far areas, rural areas. This is because of fact, as most of clinicians and ophthalmologists are concentrated in urban areas. There is the paucity of ophthalmologists in rural areas. Most of the patients with ophthalmic problems especially cataracts are poor. They are not in a position to seek ophthalmic advice and get operated. Hence, the most of voluntary organizations and social workers organize.
The eye camps by sending a team of qualified ophthalmologists or staff conduct OPDs and operate a large number of cataract cases. Today in cataract surgeries, IOLs are put in rural areas. They select a place in a health center and organize a place for ophthalmic work up. Important thing is that OT room has to be fumigated. The room used for IOL should be sterile.
