New Delhi: Hospitals may soon have to build separate toilets for transgender (TG) people and provide 'TG' as an option in their admission forms. The government is considering a proposal making it mandatory for hospitals to fulfill this provision, in line with the Supreme Court directive seeking separate toilets and special medical care for transgender population. In April last year, the apex court had created the "third gender" status for transgenders in a landmark judgment.
Among many other things, the SC also asked the Centre and states to devise social welfare schemes for the community and directed them to construct special public toilets and departments to look into their special medical issues.
