Leprosy popularly known as Hansen’s disease is a type of disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. The growth of bacteria is very slow as compared to other species hence it might take 20 years or above to develop the signs of infection. It affects nerves, and affected areas lose the sense of touch and pain which in turn leads to unnoticed injuries like cuts and burns.

Leprosy burden is low in many developed countries and many countries have reached WHO’s leprosy mission of 1/100 0000 cases but still, there are few developing where the incidence of leprosy is still high. According to the WHO report, the number of new leprosy cases reported globally in 2015 was 211 973 (2.9 new cases per 100 000 people).
