Surgeons at AIIMS Delhi have successfully performed what is believed to be India's first highly selective thoracoscopic lung preserving segmentectomy in a four month old infant with bilateral congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM), avoiding removal of an entire lung lobe and preserving healthy lung tissue. The infant was diagnosed prenatally with CPAM involving both lungs, a presentation that significantly increased the complexity of surgical management. While lobectomy is commonly performed for localized disease, bilateral involvement raised concerns about preserving long term pulmonary function.
