An Ayanavaram-based man has been awarded compensation by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC), North Chennai, after a cataract surgery at a government hospital resulted in the complete loss of vision in his right eye. The patient, a security guard by profession, had first visited the hospital in April 2024 with complaints of blurred vision in his right eye. After examination, doctors diagnosed him with cataract and performed surgery to remove it. However, post-surgery, the patient began experiencing severe pain, irritation, and swelling in the affected eye.

Medical records later revealed that a thin sheet of the cataract cortex had been left behind after the operation, which was not immediately addressed.
