Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of periodontium which poses a threat to oral health. It is characterized by loss of periodontal ligament and destruction of the adjoining alveolar bone.

The periodontal disease consists of two inflammatory diseases like gingival inflammation (gingivitis) and the loss of tooth-supporting tissues accompanied by inflammation (periodontitis). Periodontal disease is a major public health problem in the field of oral health where it affects about 20- 50% of the global population.
