I came across this research study in Business Standard, where scientists at James Cook University have found that the weakened immune system due to diabetics increases vulnerability of contacting tuberculosis up to 7 times. The investigators have therefore recommended that all diabetes sufferers be screened for tuberculosis. "It is especially important because the prevalence of type two diabetes is increasing at a very significant pace," said Dr. Robert Norton, Director of Microbiology at Townville Hospital.
It was further reported that results of this study, undertaken at Townsville Hospital, were in line with research conducted in developing countries and show a similar link between the two conditions. The study was published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. I am not sure how this study relates in India. Any thoughts or comments?
