Recently we had a death in the family. The patient was a diabetic and he was on Injection Insulin. He died of Kidney Failure. This makes me think whether we doctors are partly responsible for this? How many times do the doctors explain and educate the patient about the disease and how he can look after himself if he knows the complications of wrong food habits and use of alchohol. Doctors do not have the time? or inclination to explain to the patient and his family the need for diet control weight control exercise and moderation in everything?

Giving medicine alone is not enough counselling is more important and regular follow-ups are as important. We know that India is No.1 in the world as far as diabetes is concerned. We also know genes of diabetes and hypertension are passed on to the next generation. I think it is time for us doctors to wake up and put all effort to curb both diabetes…
