Sleeve gastrectomy impacts bone mass and bone marrow fat. However, long-term studies investigating its effect on vertebral bone density and strength in adolescents and young adults are still lacking. A 2-year study investigated the effects of sleeve gastrectomy on bone strength and bone marrow fat using biomechanical computed tomography and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The participants aged 13-24 years (n=54) were randomized into the sleeve gastrectomy (SG) group and the control group (only diet and counseling).
Compared to the control group, SG patients showed higher bone marrow fat of the lumbar spine , which was inversely associated with strength parameters, confirming its negative impact on skeletal integrity . Moreover,Β SG patients showed reduced vertebral bone density and strength in the lumbar spine and reduced trabecular bone mineral density. The study results indicated theβ¦
