Domestic violence encompasses a broad range of physical, sexual, emotional, and financial abuse between current or former partners, regardless of whether they live together. There is a well-established association between domestic abuse and numerous health conditions, particularly mental health issues such as depression, self-harm, and substance use disorders. It is also linked to unplanned pregnancy termination, sexually transmitted infections, and medically unexplained symptoms. Notably, domestic violence accounts for up to 12% of emergency department (ED) visits, and approximately 30% of cases begin during pregnancy.
This positions ED staff uniquely to identify and support those affected. This guideline supports clinicians caring for adult patients in the ED who have experienced, or are currently experiencing, domestic abuse. Key Recommendations ย Information Availability : The EDโฆ
