The Center has proposed a draft policy for compulsory genetic screening of pregnant woman. The draft policy is titled as “Policy for Prevention and Control of Hemoglobinopathies- Thalassemia, Sickle Cell Disease and variant Hemoglobins In India” . According to the policy, not only prevention of inherited disorders such as thalassemia and sickle cell anemia should be considered, but also the comprehensive care should be taken of patients diagnosed with these diseases. This policy has recognized the need of creating awareness about such disorders for acceptance of carrier screening.

If woman is found to be a carrier, husbands will be screened; and if both found to be carriers, prenatal diagnosis will be offered to ensure baby’s safety.
