Drotaverine is an antispasmodic drug, structurally related to papaverine and drotaverine is a selective inhibitor of enzyme phosphodiesterase 4 with no anticholinergic effect. Drotaverine correct cyclic amp and calcium balance at spasm site thus relieves smooth muscle spasm and pain and more effective in the biliary, renal, uterine and gastrointestinal tract. Papaverine found in opium poppy and first discovered in 1948, but papaverine differ in both structure and pharmacological action from opium alkaloids. It's structurally related to Drotaverine. Available as 40 and 80 mgms tablet for oral use and injection 20mgms/ml in 2 ml ampoule. Use cautiously in case of: Hepatic,cardiac and renal insufficiency.
