Dubai is in the process of setting up a skin bank which will store excess skin, that will be surgically removed from obese patients during bariatric surgery. This initiative will benefit burn and cancer patients who require extensive reconstruction. CEO of Dubai Healthcare Corporation under the Dubai Health Authority said that the process has been initiated by doctors from the plastic surgery department at Rashid Hospital. He further added that the expansion plans were an opportunity to deliver world-class healthcare and preventing patients from going abroad for treatment.
For the skin bank, an initial consent will be obtained from the person donating the skin. Skin cut away from patients of bariatric surgery will be preserved in incubators according to international standards.
