Hypersensitivity Reactions (HRs) to measles vaccines in allergic individuals well-established. The new mRNA vaccines are the latest entrants for the pediatric population that must also be evaluated for risk factors for HRs such as a history of allergy, allergy to the vaccine excipients, and adverse first dose reactions to improve vaccine safety. Various types of immediate and delayed systemic HRs include maculopapular rashes, thrombocytopenia, Arthus reaction, and purpura within hours of exposure. These anaphylactic reactions are assessed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the new COVID-19 vaccines.
