The veno-muscular pumps of the lower limb are responsible for a series of events by their successive activation during walking. Essentially, they act like a peripheral heart and, along with the venous valves, they serve to avoid the gravitational reflux during muscular diastole. Stiffness of the ankle and/or dispersion of the collectors in the gastrocnemius can hamper the functioning of the veno-muscular pump and worsen venous return, resulting in severe chronic venous insufficiency.
