Individuals with diabetes face a two to threefold higher risk of developing CVDs, including heart attack and stroke. Although maintaining optimal blood glucose levels and achieving a glycated hemoglobin (HbA₁c) below 7% are essential for reducing diabetes-related complications, emerging evidence from recent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reveals that glycemic control alone does not eliminate cardiovascular risk. Despite significant progress in diabetes management, misconceptions persist that lowering HbA₁c sufficiently protects the heart.
This mythbuster aims to clarify that diabetes and cardiovascular disease are deeply interconnected and that effective prevention requires a comprehensive, multifactorial approach addressing not only glucose but also blood pressure, lipids, weight, and overall cardiovascular health.
