The Bombay HC has asked BMC to consider setting up a permanent medical board in its hospitals to deal with medical termination of pregnancy cases. The petition was filed by a pregnant lady from Nashik seeking to abort her more than 20-weeks fetus who suffered from some deformities in the brain. This decision comes after the division bench of Justices noted that only one permanent medical board is functional in Mumbai city. The judges further considered that almost every appeal asking for the termination of pregnancy is referred to this hospital.
Therefore, the court stated that “ We cannot put the burden on only one single hospital. There must be some alternatives ”.
