Herpes simplex keratitis is the leading infectious cause of corneal ulcers and blindness worldwide. The estimated global incidence of herpes simplex virus keratitis is roughly 1.5 million, including 40,000 new cases each year. A high recurrence rate is an additional burden. Herpes simplex keratitis can progress to corneal perforation or blindness if left untreated. However, innovations in antiviral therapeutics can ensure the effective treatment of active infection and the prevention of latent infection.
