Although malaria is preventable, it affects over 240 million people, causing 625,000 deaths each year. Moreover, the disease affects 70% of children under the age of five years. The WHO has urged all countries to accelerate the efforts and strategies to prevent, detect, and treat malaria. World Malaria Day also focuses on reaching the most vulnerable, ensuring no person or population is left behind with the disease.

The theme for this year is “Time to deliver zero malaria: invest, innovate, implement.” Efforts are being taken by many organizations, such as the WHO, Against Malaria Foundation, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to eradicate malaria.
