The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has raised concerns over the growing misuse and misprescription of new weight-loss drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro. IMA national president Dilip Bhanushali said these GLP-1 medications should only be prescribed by certified endocrinologists or diabetologists, and the association will soon write to the health ministry and drug regulator seeking stricter prescription norms. Doctors have warned that the drugs are increasingly being prescribed by cosmetologists, physiotherapists, ayurveda and homeopathy practitioners, often for cosmetic reasons such as social media appearance.
A doctor from a private hospital in Mumbai noted that online pharmacies are also selling these medicines with minimal prescription checks, raising risks of misuse. While any registered MBBS or MD doctor can legally prescribe these drugs, the lack of specific restrictions is fuelingβ¦
