To check non-judicious use of blood platelets, blood bank of the Varanasi branch of Indian Medical Association (IMA) has decided to dispense blood products including platelets only if the requisition slip of a patient state that there is low platelet count or blood coagulopathy. The decision has been taken following the revelation of non-judicious usage of platelets, especially in post rainy season with an outbreak of dengue, in a monthly audit of the blood bank. The branch has decided to monitor the usage of blood components and prevent cases where unqualified and unregistered medical practitioners lure patients for personal monetary gain.
