The IMA has strongly opposed the National Medical Commission Bill that seeks to replace the MCI with a new body, claiming it will cripple the medical profession. The draft NMC bill was recently cleared by the Union Cabinet. The NMC will have government-nominated chairman and members, who will be selected by a search committee under the Cabinet Secretary.

Opposing NMC bill, IMA stated that “ NMC will cripple the functioning of the medical profession by making it completely answerable to the bureaucracy and non-medical administrators .” Pointing out to the flaws of NMC bill, IMA said that NMC bill takes away the voting right of every doctor in India to elect their medical council. “ Abolishing a democratic institution and replacing it by a body in which majority are nominated by the government is certainly a retrograde step .” IMA further said that draft bill allows the private medical…
