Indiaβs Department of Pharmaceuticals plans to promote 113 medical devices manufactured in the country. This initiative aims to reduce the dependence on imported medical devices from 75% to 50% over the next five years. These medical devices include knee, hip, breast, and cochlear implants , contact lenses, hearing aids, chemotherapy devices, X-ray and ultrasound machines, dialysis machines, ventilators, defibrillators, stethoscopes, syringes, masks, surgical gowns and drapes, pulse oximeters, heart-lung machines, and kits to detect pregnancy and infectious diseases.
In 2023-24, India imported medical devices worth $8.2 million and exported devices worth $3.8 million. To improve domestic medical device manufacturing, the union government has supported the establishment of four medical device parks in Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh.
