The largest health protection scheme, 'Ayushman Bharat-National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS)', has been initiated ambitiously. However, the package rates have caused quite of a stir in the medical fraternity. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has criticised the scheme for its reimbursement rates set for treatments being too low.

National president and honorary secretary general of IMA recently mentioned that the rates quoted by the government are abysmal and impracticable, most of them are not even covering 30% of the cost of the procedure. In defense, the CEO of the Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission (ABNHPM), stated that the government has done a rigorous job in setting the package rates based on available data. Is the insurance-driven healthcare a failed experiment?
