Otosclerosis is an abnormal bone remodeling in the middle ear where the bony otic capsule is replaced by spongy bone. The abnormal bone remodeling commonly occurs in the stapes region and predominantly causes hearing loss in young adults. Genetic factors and measles virus infections are postulated to cause otosclerosis. Hearing aids can be used to manage hearing loss in patients with otosclerosis. However, stapedotomy is a successful surgical procedure to treat otosclerosis.
