Accumulation of calcium and collagen on arterial walls causes increased pulse pressure, which in turn causes the systolic blood pressure to rise and diastolic pressure to reduce. If left untreated, isolated systolic hypertension can cause end-organ damage. Therefore, early identification of risk factors, diagnosis, and initiation of treatment are crucial to reduce mortality and morbidity in the elderly population.
