Many companies are marketing microscopes with LED illumination for microscopy. As a practicing pathologist, as it is a new type of illumination, I do not know whether it is safe for eyes especially during slide reporting for long durations ( many hours at times).
We see slides with background light seen at high intensity and from very close distance. Eye fatigue is a common occurrence but I could not come across any study which specifically addresses the issue of safety of LED light in this setting.
