As per WHO data, 1,27,558 new leprosy cases were detected globally in 2020. Despite advances in medical science, leprosy continues to be a public health challenge, especially in the tropics. The ecology, transmission, and pathogenicity of the incriminated bacilli remain to be poorly understood. In addition, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation of the leprosy prevention program was severely hampered, resulting in fewer new cases detected in 2020 than in 2019.

This emphasized the need for the continuous implementation of leprosy control activities, including monitoring and prevention programs, for the global eradication of leprosy.
