US residency was copied and central government medical colleges only adopted in the 1980s. The residency leading to specialty experience was suggested by William Osler in Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, Md in the end of 19th century, when he was invited to start medical school in Boston. Half of the money was given to start hospital and half of the money was given to start the University. The place chosen was ideal because of its proximity to Washington DC.
Baltimore was the place where the last battle between Confederation and Union forces took place and it was here that the Union Army made Gen Lee of Confederation surrender. The present 50 states of America happened gradually and the last state to join the USA was Hawaii.
