Irregular menstrual periods, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovaries are the main traits of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Additionally, heavy or no menstrual periods, infertility (chronic anovulation), excess hair growth, acne, thickened, oily, and velvety patches of skin, and pelvic pain are symptoms of PCOS. Besides infertility, obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obstructive sleep apnea, cardiovascular risk, endometrial cancer, and depression are also associated with PCOS. However, PCOS is underdiagnosed and often needs multiple evaluations to confirm it.
