Refractory status epilepticus (RSE) has lacked a consensus definition over the years; some consider it as status epilepticus that persists despite treatment with benzodiazepine and one antiepileptic medication, while others define RSE as a failure of benzodiazepine and two antiepileptic medications. Regardless, RSE is a medical emergency that requires aggressive treatment to avoid long-term complications and reduce mortality. It can be treated by resolving the underlying cause and administering intravenous anesthetics and antiepileptic drugs.
