Second-trimester abortions remain an essential component in the comprehensive care of women. Studies of medical abortions performed with misoprostol have suggested that retainment of the placenta is the most common pregnancy-related complication (21%). Despite the risk of the retained placenta during the third stage of labor, no evidence-based guidelines exist for healthcare providers regarding the acceptable length of expectant management.
