Finally after passing through various debates, the NMC bill has found its way to the cabinet. A bill that will bring transformation in the current system of regulation of medical education through the Medical Council of India (MCI) has been finalized and sent to the Cabinet for the approval. The National Medical Commission Bill will be scrapping the MCI and create a 20-member National Medical Commission (NMC) as the apex body to envisage a four-tier structure for the regulation of medical education in the country.

The commission will supervise four autonomous boards that will deal with undergraduate and post-graduate education and assess the rating of medical institutions and registration of medical practitioners and enforcement of medical ethics. Furthermore, a Medical Advisory Council (MAC) will also be constituted with members from states to outline medical education and training.…
