Medical Council of India (MCI) has adopted ‘guidelines’ relating to sexual boundaries for medicos as framed by the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS). The guidelines are to be followed by medical professionals while examining and treating patients. The guidelines essentially specify that medicos must not enter into unhealthy relationships with patients, especially in the sexual context.
It is the ethical duty of all medical professionals to ensure proper concern for patients and this would imply that their own conduct should in no way disrespect their patients. Further, it also propounded that, medicos should always ensure that they do not exploit the doctor-patient relationship for personal, social, business or sexual gain.
