More than 2500 Medical interns from all over Maharashtra have gone on an indefinite strike from June 13, demanding an increase in their stipend. This strike is to express their resentment in not receiving salary increment to Rs. 11,000 from Rs. 6,000, even after the revision was assured by the government in 2015. One-year internship is a mandatory part of the MBBS curriculum. Medical interns in Maharashtra are presently getting stipend of Rs 6,000 per month .
The interns are saying that it is very low as stipend amount in other states like Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Assam, Kerala is approx. Rs. 20000-21000 .
