Various standard reconstructive modalities can correct most superficial skin defects of the midface. Managing large composite defects, however, is challenging in routine clinical practice owing to the need to evaluate the nature of the tissues involved and structural and functional considerations. Advances in microsurgical techniques have allowed reliable wound closure and a substantial decrease in patient morbidity, low complication rates, and a variety of reconstructive flap options in a single stage. Furthermore, advanced microsurgical procedures, combined efforts of multidisciplinary teams, and planning of virtual surgical procedures can help achieve reconstructive goals.
